The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has reported that global exports of Scotch whisky reached £5.6 billion in 2023.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has published its annual report detailing the global export statistics for Scotch whisky, revealing that in 2023, exports reached £5.6 billion, equivalent to 1.35 billion 70cl bottles.

While these figures represent a decrease from 2022, with export value falling by 9.5% and volume by 19%, they still mark an improvement from pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

The report highlights 2022 as an exceptional year for Scotch whisky exports, surpassing £6 billion for the first time due to market reopening post-pandemic and increased travel retail. The 2023 figures, however, reflect a return to a more normalized market environment.

In 2023, the Asia-Pacific region remained the largest in terms of export value, driven by record exports to China, which saw a 165% increase since 2019. Despite a 7% decline in export value compared to 2022, the United States retained its position as the most valuable market for Scotch exports.

In terms of volume, France emerged as the largest market, surpassing India despite lagging behind in 2022. India is identified as a priority growth market by the SWA, advocating for trade agreements to reduce tariffs on Scotch imports.

Mark Kent, CEO of the SWA, emphasized Scotch whisky’s resilience amidst global challenges, attributing its success to ongoing investments in teams, tourism, sustainability, and global presence. Kent urged government support to sustain export growth, including reducing spirits duty and opposing restrictions on Scotch whisky marketing.

UK government minister for exports, Lord Offord, praised Scotch whisky as a significant contributor to the UK economy, highlighting its continued outperformance of pre-pandemic levels. Offord reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering export-led growth through free trade agreements and market expansion initiatives.
